"From a young age I have always been interested to learn how leading a 'healthy lifestyle' in terms of exercise and nutrition can affect the body, the way we feel and ultimately the link with disease as we age."

Why are you passionate about women's health?

As a woman myself with a keen interest in how I age and elongate my own health span, I have become more aware of the gender gap that remains between men and women as we age. This gender gap in health span has not improved over the last two decades despite many significant advances in medicine. Women in society do so much for others, we nurture our children and take care of older relatives and it saddens me to see so many older women living dependent upon others, in relative frailty, with a higher burden of chronic disease when compared to men of the same age.

What one piece of advice would you give to our audience?

To get an exercise habit! To start an exercise regime that involves being comfortable with lifting weights from a younger age and to instil this into our daughters and our younger generation. This would prevent so many falls and frailty as we age.

What is missing from the current conversation around women's health?

I would love to see more of a focus on nourishing our bodies with food that strengthens us rather than a restrictive pattern that revolves around calorie counting and deprivation. I would also love to see some education at high school level around the power of hormones and the effect the fluctuation of these hormones can have on our brains in terms of mental wellbeing.
