"So much of what we call dysfunction is just a woman’s body responding to her situation. We need to stop pathologising what might actually be protective."
Why are you passionate about women’s health?
I'm really passionate about Women's Health because it took me a long time to realise how badly it was being handled and the more I noticed how my training had ignored Women's Health, the more angry I got about it. So my work these days is really informed by a wish to try and, I don't know, redress the balance in some way and help to improve women's access to information about their bodies.
One piece of advice you would give to our audience?
Knowledge is power. It is so important to understand and learn about your body. You actually have to advocate for yourself quite heavily in the current health environment. So don't be afraid to do that. Learn, speak and help change things.
What’s missing from the current conversation around women’s health?
Where do I start? I think we need to include women's voices, women's lived experiences. We need to talk about raising the bar and aiming higher towards pleasure and good outcomes for women, not just avoidance of bad things.
